Before Marvin Gaye was paired with Kim Weston, Tammi Terrell or Diana Ross, Mary Wells was his first duet partner and her success helped push him a little further into the spotlight. Their album ‘Together’ was released in April 1964 and IMO is one of the best Motown albums made. Even though the songs are quite simple, their performances are excellent and prove that this pairing was just as good as any other.

For those of you who have been fortunate enough to hear songs from this album, my question is:
Do you think that their voices complimented each other well enough?

I think they're voices were very well matched; however, I thought that of the four voices he was paired with Ms. Well's was number 3

Number 3 as in ranking: 1. Kim Weston 2. Tammi Terrell 3. Mary Wells 4. Diane Ross That's how my ears hear it I think that's about right  Even though Marvin and Tammi had the most sucess I do think Kim was more of a match for him But of the four, Miss Wells really did have the softest voice :hotmama:

Marvin was fortunate enough to make beautiful music with all of his partners in the classic era.
He and Mary brought a classic kind of sound to their duets. :groovintothebeat:

If you are a true fan of Mary, let's not forget that Mary had a voice that could be rough or soft. Producing her was difficult because most producers wanted her to be soft after My Guy. Let's not forget Woman In Love, Gigolo, These Arms, 500 Miles, and If you can't Give Her Love(Give Her Up). Have you ever heard When I'm Gone. I also saw her sing Wilson's Pickett's Don't Let The Green Grass Fool you. The girl could sing and had a sexy sound with it. Long live the Queen of Motown.

Yeah, I think Marvin and Mary's voices complemented each other very well. Mary was sassy and Marvin was smooth: a perfect match? You bet your bottom dollar. But I'm a have to say this: In ranking, these girls go as follows: 1.) Tammi Terrell 2.) Kim Weston 3.) Mary Wells 4.) Diane Ross I love the voices of Tammi, Mary & Kim because they gave Marvin a certain vocal distinction that he knew he couldn't get with Diane in his grill. But yeah, teaming Marvin & Mary together was great!!!

She had a new technique for just about every song. But what I think most of us here are referring to, are her more common duet songs with Marvin, when both had a sort of sweetness to their vocals and style Mary isn't the real Queen of Motown for nothing

I like your ranking of the female singers with Marvin. Marvin and Mary had that classic sound.
Try listening to some of her recordings she made with other record companies. I have all of her recordings except for In And Out of Love (LP) and Easy Touch (LP). Epic needs to release both of these LP's in CD format. Warner Brothers need to release I found what I wanted, give her up, cancel my subscription, and I see a future in you. My collection will be complete.
