1940: Born in Detroit. By end of the decade, William Robinson is thrilled when his poems are posted on bulletin board at Dwyer Elementary School on the city's north end.
1955: At Northern High School, forms group that evolves into the Matadors, eventually comprised of Smokey, Bobby Rogers, Ronnie White, Pete Moore and Emerson Rogers.
1957: Changes name of Matadors to Miracles at suggestion of new manager, Berry Gordy Jr., after Claudette Rogers joined group. Gordy helps Smokey put his lyrics to music.
1958: First Miracles single, "Got a Job," an answer song to the Silhouettes' "Get a Job," is released by End Records on Smokey's 18th birthday.
1959: Still teenagers, Smokey and Claudette marry. "Shop Around," with its refrain "My mama told me ..." is the Miracles' first hit.
1962-63. The Miracles hit with "You Really Got a Hold on Me" and "Mickey's Monkey."
1964-65. Writes and produces "My Guy" for Mary Wells and "My Girl" for the Temptations, as well as these for the Miracles: "The Love I Saw In You Was Just a Mirage," "Ooo Baby Baby," "Baby, Baby, Don't Cry," "The Tracks of My Tears."
1972: Goes solo after last performance with the Miracles.
1975: Releases "Quiet Storm," spawning a radio format a year later
1979: Hits with "Cruisin' " and two years later, "Being With You."
1986: Divorces Claudette after 27 years of marriage.
2002: Marries Frances Glandney, an interior designer and 25-year friend.
2004: Releases "Food for the Spirit," a spiritual album, and launches "Smokey Robinson: The Soul is in the Bowl" food company with two frozen entrees -- seafood gumbo and beans and rice.
May 2005: Releases "My World: The Definitive Collection."
