They remained at Motown until, what, '77ish? I've read reports that the song was for Paul's lead vocals in the Tempts, but the Contours were actually at Hitsville; then I've read that the Tempts were sought but couldn't be found; and I've also read that the Tempts rehearsed this one, but couldn't give Gordy the grit he was looking for on it. Not sure which to believe; Paul, if anyone, sang with more grit than he could ever need. But this was one of those songs destined to be a hit. Billy had grit about him. I think, the Tops, if they'd been around could also have handled this one, the Originals and even the Isley's if they'd been around too. New thread idea; I've got to keep up with these

Shoot, the Isleys could've hit if they had been in Motown earlier too, lol. Strange things that happen can make a hit.

the tops on that number?! if so it would be a cut off an album. the isley's version would've been no#1 and the originals version would've been a love song. how could u picture the originals on that one?

The Tops could have made this a hit, like Shake Me, Wake Me, Helpless, It's the Same Old Song. That type of sound. The same way you picture the Tempts sticking around for this; using my earmagination and with the lead of Hank Dixon. His baritone could have carried this one. The Originals have/had more of a range than the hit ballads. 'Do You Love Me' is as much of a love song as any and pratically all of classic Motown's love songs.

I think the Tempts, Four Tops, Isleys and Originals were all capable of recording their own versions of the song. :woo:
But that'll always belong to the Contours! :boygroup4:

I love Paul and think he would have put his signature stank on it, but I don't think it woulda been a hit for the Tempts at that point :idunno:

I KNOW!!! I think it was Joe Hunter who was like "this song?! Yeah riiiight" but the Contours were happy to get it though. I think THEY knew it would be a hit so I can imagine Joe and the Funks hearing about the song going " THE SONG IS A HIT! "
