Thursday is inauguration day in Detroit, and a ceremony to swear in Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was held at the Fox Theatre.
There were many speakers slotted to address the large crowd gathered at the Fox. Among the speakers was Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm.
Granholm said, "I will do all that I can to partner with you, Mr. Mayor, for the sake of Detroit and the entire state of Michigan. And I just have to say, as an aside, as a personal matter in watching this unbelievable election, just such an amazing thing. Thank you for giving all people, especially the ones who are often unseen and unheard, a reason to believe that their participation changed history. Because it did!"
Festivities began at 11 a.m. Thursday morning, marked by speeches, songs and prayers. Mayor Kilpatrick’s two twin sons, Jelani and Jalil, introduced the Kilpatrick family to those in attendance, before Mayor Kilpatrick was sworn in.
The new City Clerk Janice Winfrey was scheduled to be sworn in. There are big expectations riding on Winfrey’s shoulders, as the candidate who seemingly came out of nowhere and was voted in against outgoing Jackie Currie.
Nine City Council members will also be sworn in. There are 5 familiar faces that have been on council before, along with 4 new faces, including veteran Motown singer Martha Reeves.
Outgoing City Council President Maryann Mahaffey, who had to retire because of illness, was also at the inauguration, and is expected to be honored with a special tribute.
