Release date: Motown Monday July 4th 2005
Little did I suspect back in 2002 that the release of the original Cellarful Of Motown would create quite a stir. I knew of course that the 40 special songs on there would light up the worlds of Motown collectors all over the country - what I didn't expect was the level of interest from all around the world, leading to Motown US taking the unprecedented step of releasing a UK compiled album on their own territory - talk about coals to Newcastle.
Well nearly three years later we are about to unleash the second volume of the series, and while the premise of the original has remained intact - all 42 songs are unreleased, the horizons have been broadened just a bit. So you will find a couple of familiar songs in a totally different format, a few tracks from the labels early years and a surprising revisit to an early 60's instrumental by a 70's female vocalist.
What remains constant though is the quality of these long-lost grooves. These are not fillers, nor are they throwaway songs; why they were never released is a mystery that will probably always remain so.
What better way to commemorate Independence Day than to celebrate the liberation of 42 musty, dusty must have grooves from their years of exile.
