...never released "Never Can Say Goodbye" by the Jackson 5 because he thought the lyrics were "too adult" for then 12-year-old Michael Jackson (it was released as a single in April 1971) to sing. Luckily the song became a big hit for the J5. ;D

One of my favorites from J5.
Gordy passed or nearly passed on a lot of good material and artists :bonk:

Yeah, and if Gordy had had his way, Marvin Gaye wouldn't have had released "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" nor had done "What's Going On". Thank God the dude changed his mind. Even HE didn't know what made a hit. HA HA!

Berry never knew how to market artists. And once he got the artists off the ground and into the national prominence, he had a hard time of how to properly promote them. When Smokey said that Marvin's "What's Going On" joint was hot, Berry said "hell to the naw, tell Marvin to come up with a love song" or whatever, and Smoke had to tell Berry that Marvin "ain't gonna stand for it". That's when I'm like 'why couldn't Smoke handle what music to release?' I mean Berry DID make him a vice president of the label, did he not? Sheesh.

I think Smokey should of been president of Motown. He was the driving force of the company and a major key player. He done it all. :victory:
