At 15 years old, Mary Wells became the First Lady of Motown when she auditioned as a songwriter but received a recording contract from Berry Gordy instead.
She was immediately assigned to Smokey Robinson, who wrote and produced three top ten singles: The One Who Really Loves You, You Beat Me To The Punch and Two Lovers in 1962.
In ‘64 she gained her first number 1 on the pop charts with ‘My Guy’. It became one of the years biggest recordings and made her an instant hit on both side of the Atlantic, but in a twist it also became her last official Motown release and by age 21 she left the label.
Unfortunately her career was never the same. Deals with, 20th Century Fox, Jubilee and Warner never worked out and it wasn’t until the 1980’s that she made a brief comeback, before her untimely death in 1992.
Although her stay at Motown was brief, she left us some of the sweetest music ever made and will always be the true Queen of the Classic Motown era

I wish that Epic and Warner would release the recordings of Mary on CD. The LP's were In And Out of Love and Easy Touch. The unreleased recordings produced at Warner Brothers/Reprise were If You Can't Give Her Love, Give Her Up, Cancel My Subscrition, Don't Keep Me Hanging On, I Found What I Wanted, and I See A Future in You. I really need these recordings in CD format. These were great recordings by the Queen of Motown.

I was just listening to a lot of Mary Wells stuff. This woman paved the way for Dionne and Diana and yet she doesn't get HALF the accolades those two got. Her star should've burned more brighter than it did.
