I'm always intrigued at tracks that sounded like something Marvin could've done and made it his song, especially during the turbulent '80s. I'm a fan of Phil Collins' '80s material and he was admittedly vocally attracted to Marvin Gaye's work. You could sense some of Marvin in Phil's work and there's at least two songs or three or four that I could've seen Marvin sing instead of it being Phil:
"In the Air Tonight"
"Two Hearts"
"Against All Odds"
"One More Night"
"Take Me Home"
Least those five. Especially "In the Air Tonight". I mean, he's all subtle and deep in the beginning with the beat in the back and that guitar wail and then when those drums kick in and Marvin rips it and then gives it a gospel jolt near the end. Since that song conveys a painful theme, Marvin would've been made to do that song.
"One More Night", of course, and "Two Hearts", are Marvin-esque songs anyway. So Motown and yet so Marvin.
Another '80s song Marvin could've done, instead of Hall & Oates doing it, he could've done "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)". I mean, I know he was going for something similar to that when he was recording "Midnight Love". He'd been listening to John Lennon, Bryan Eno and the Talking Heads and he wanted to do some new-wave mixed with '80s pop, reggae and electro funk-styled R&B/soul, blah, blah, blah.
Of course, Columbia didn't want that and Marvin gave them a satisfying record but not the type he wanted to make. Oh man, there were so many opportunities that I could see Marvin taking, making it better than what other artists had done it. How about y'all? :groovintothebeat:
