Martha Reeves to perform in Owosso 'Motown' production
Martha Reeves, the Motown legend made famous by her string of hits with the group Martha and the Vandellas, will be perfoming during the Owosso Community Players' production of "Motown's Really Got A Hold on Me," happening Curwood Festival weekend, June 3-5.
Reeves will be performing her signature hits from 1965, "Nowhere to Run" and "Dancing in the Street." The revue also boasts selections from such Motown greats as the Supremes and Smokey Robinson with mid-Michigan performers belting the hits.
Directed by OCP regular Dennis Bohac, the musical will be performed Friday at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., Saturday at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., and a matinee performance on Sunday at 3 p.m.
The box office opens one hour prior to the performance. Tickets are general admission and cost $8 for adults and $5 for students.
While she had a string of failed attempts at stardom, Reeves was determined to make it at Motown Records - although she at first couldn't even secure an audition at the prestigious label. Reeves eventually took a job as a secretary at Motown, hoping for a chance to shine.
She began singing back-up for such greats as Marvin Gaye and was later noticed by Motown executives.
With her group the Vandellas (named after Detroit street Van Dyke Avenue and one of Reeves' favorite actresses, Della Reese), Reeves racked up a string of hits with Barry Gordy at the helm of the Detroit-based Motown label in the 1960s, including "Heat Wave" and "Dancing in the Street."
Reeves was inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
Reeves will hold meet-and-greet sessions with fans following her performances at The Lebowsky Center in downtown Owosso during the Curwood Festival and her latest CD, "Home to You" will be available for purchase.
