Jennifer Hudson, Eddie Murphy, Dreamgirls wins big at Golden Globes
LOS ANGELES - Somewhere in Heaven, Florence Ballard is somewhere wearing a big smile on her face.
Ballard, the inspiration behind the Dreamgirls' movie's Effie White, played by former "American Idol" contender and rising singer-actress Jennifer Hudson got a little more coverage and praise from a member of the younger generation: Hudson, 25, won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the Supremes-inspired musical and while accepting the award, the singer told the audience that the award was dedicated to the late Supremes' founder before leaving the podium.
But she wasn't the only member of the film to win. Comedian-actor Eddie Murphy, a three-time Golden Globe nominee, finally earned his Golden Globe for his role of the R&B dynamo James "Thunder" Early in the film. Murphy's Early was inspired by soul shouters such as James Brown, Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye, whom like Ballard, is another Motown icon.
The only wins the film lost were for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical (Beyonce Knowles, who played the Diana Ross-esque Deena Jones), which lost against Meryl Streep's role in "The Devil Wears Prada" and Best Original Song for "Listen", which lost against Prince's theme song for the animated film "Happy Feet". Another win by a prominent African-American actor was Forest Whitaker for his role as an African dictator in the film "The Last King of Scotland" for Best Actor in a Dramatic Motion Picture.
Usually it's said whoever wins the Golden Globes are strong contenders to win the Academy Awards and if it's likely, like Jamie Foxx did with Ray Charles in "Ray", Jennifer Hudson may once again shout out Ballard's name one more time and maybe Eddie Murphy may shout out James Brown if he gets his.

This ain't an AP article BUT this is how I'd done it. Congrats to Jennifer, Eddie and Forest!
