NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - "Celebrity Duets" carried a strong tune Tuesday, with its two-hour premiere leading Fox to a primetime victory in two key measures.
The two-hour premiere featured performances by actress Lea Thompson, actor/comedians Hal Sparks and Cheech Marin, and "Xena" star Lucy Lawless, paired with Motown icon Smokey Robinson, pop balladeer Michael Bolton and country music star Lee Ann Womack, among others.
It averaged 8.1 million viewers and a 3.0 rating/9 share in the adults 18-49 demographic from 8-10 p.m., according to preliminary ratings estimates from Nielsen Media Research.
"Duets" fell in its first hour to CBS' "Big Brother," with the Fox show averaging 7.7 million viewers and a 2.9/9 to the 8.6 million viewers and 3.1/10 for "Big Brother." Meanwhile NBC's "Fear Factor" (5.1 million, 1.8/5) sank to its lowest ratings of the summer and well below its summer average of a 2.2/7.
Despite a stronger "Duets" at 9 p.m. -- it rose to 8.6 million viewers and a 3.1/8 in the demo -- it split the victories with CBS. "Duets" got the most viewers while another musical competition, "Rock Star: Supernova," won in the demo with 7 million viewers and a 3.2/9.
At 10 p.m. NBC's "Law & Order: SVU" won both key measures with 9.8 million viewers and a 2.9/8. ABC's "Primetime: The Outsiders" (7.8 million, 2.6/7) and CBS's "48 Hours Mystery" (6 million, 1.9/5) trailed.
For the night, Fox was able to win in both measures with 8.1 million viewers and a 3.0/9 to CBS's 7.2 million and a 2.7/8.
