The 19th Annual Soul Train Awards will be broadcast in syndication beginning tomorrow, Saturday (March 12). Check local listings for channels and times. The event was taped February 28 at the Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
Usher won four awards: Best R&B/Soul Single - Male; Best R&B/Soul Single - Group, Band or Duo for his duet with Alicia Keys; and Best R&B/Soul Or Rap Dance Cut for "Yeah!" He also was named Sammy Davis, Jr. Entertainer Of The Year, Male.
Alicia Keys won three awards: Best R&B/Soul Single - Female and Best R&B/Soul Album - Female, as well as her duo award with Usher. Ciara was honored as the Sammy Davis, Jr. Entertainer Of The Year, Female, and was also named the Coca-Cola Best R&B Soul or Rap New Artist. In addition, Ice Cube was also honored with the Quincy Jones Award for Lifetime Achievement.
On winning the best R&B single by a duo for "My Boo," Usher thanked Soul Train's producer and onetime host for giving him his very first award ever, as well as his fans: "Don Cornelius, man, thank you so so much, for giving me my first Soul Train Music Award. This is not my first, but the first award that I'd ever received was a Soul Train Music Award. Since then I've been able to build a great career because of all the people who've been able to help me articulate my self, and also the fans."
Alicia Keys accepted one of her awards via video from the road: "Soul Train has been here with me from the beginning so it's truly, truly -- I'm so thankful to have been nominated and won this award. I'm so sorry that I couldn't physically be there with you today. I'm on tour, otherwise you know that I would be right there. But I'm definitely here with you in spirit."
Ice Cube, recipient of the Quincy Jones Lifetime Achievement Award, thanked the fans that have supported him since he emerged as a rapper through his current film career, as well as his children: "You know, you been my backbone since 1989 and my kids, you know my kids, Darryl, Shea, Kareema, Sharif, they put up with all my big ideas, you know, since I've been doing this thing."
Backstage, Cube noted that at 35 he's a little young to receive a lifetime achievement honor and plans to qualify for another one: "I said I hope they give out two because when I'm 70 I plan to get another one. Yeah, you know, I still feel like I've got a lot to do. I still feel like... I've achieved a lot but I still see things for me to do: movies, projects. I still love entertainment, I am young. I'm going to keep doing it as long as I enjoy it and hopefully we'll rack up a few more of these."
Other winners included Destiny's Child for Best R&B/Soul Album - Group, Band Or Duo; Jay-Z, who picked up the Michael Jackson Award for Best R&B/Soul Or Rap Music Video for "99 Problems"; and Israel And New Breed earning Best Gospel Album for Live
From Another Level.
