Third Time's A Charm For Stewart's 'Songbook'
Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Dolly Parton and Bette Midler are among the artists guesting on Rod Stewart's third collection of standards for J Records. Due Oct. 19, "Stardust... The Great American Songbook: Volume III" also features contributions from saxophonist Dave Koz, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and pianist Dave Grusin.
Stewart had previously told Billboard the "Songbook" series would end after last year's "As Time Goes By." As with that album and 2002's debut "It Had To Be You," the new album was produced by BMG Music Group chairman/CEO Clive Davis.
Wonder guests on harmonica on Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," Clapton joins in on "Blue Moon" and Midler adds her pipes to "Manhattan." Parton and Stewart duet on "Baby, It's Cold Outside." The album is rounded out by standards like "S'Wonderful," "Isn't It Romantic," "Stardust," "But Not for Me," "Embraceable You" and "I Can't Get Started"
Stewart's "Songbook" series has ushered in a commercial renaissance for the artist, having shifted 4.7 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Stewart will play two U.K. dates next month before returning to action Feb. 9 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Dates are on tap through a Feb. 26 co-headlining bill with Bryan Adams in Perth, Australia.
