As it is known Gladys K was often considered the Most Soulful Woman At Motown at a time and I don't think I disagree with this statement, because the woman has some deeep and serious Soul. However I would like to know if anyone out there thinks that the title belonged to or was more worthy of another female Motown star that came along before or after Miss Knight

Thats a bit of a tough question. There were so many women at Motown who had such a distinct soulful sound who could easily wear that title, I don't know what to say lol. But I vote for Kim Weston. She is out of this world!!

But I would give that title to either her or Martha Reeves.

Either Martha or Kim would've been enough to battle against Gladys but I think Gladys had that extra OOMPH! that Kim and Martha couldn't possess. Not taking anything away from Kim & Martha but Gladys was beyond SOULFUL, she indeed embodies the word SOUL better than anybody, except for probably Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin. But yeah Martha & Kim would've been Motown's Queens of Soul for sure.

Tim, I hear you, but I think Kim really had something special in her voice also, we just didn't get to hear it until recently. Anybody that could take on Marvin, and I think only Kim and Tammi did, and best him had that something! Mary was more of a complement to Marvin's voice. Oma did well with him, I love 'So Good To Be Loved By You'. But I'd agree with Kay and throw in Brenda Holloway. I know, I know, she was known for her soothing sound. But she was a different kind of soul. When she sang it came from deep within and since a lot of songs that were for her went to Ms. Knight, I think she could have worn the title nicely

Yeah Kim & Tammi definitely MATCHED Marvin's soulful growls with their own boastful voices. That's why people remember them more for their Marvin duets than Mary and Oma. And yeah, Brenda Holloway is a GREAT SOUL SINGER! I heard her sing "Every Little Bit Hurts" Wednesday night and was like (((SHOCK)))! And she briefly sung Marvin's "Distant Lover". WHEN SHE DID THAT, I SNAPPED MY FINGERS WITH HER! Brenda's a rare gem in Motown. Sad that she didn't get much coverage in Motown because she was so different from the pack. That's the problem Motown really had - they diversified but when it came to soul artists of different regions, they did POORLY! LOL!

I think she's a good singer but soulful...na uh :idunno:

And Brenda is still one of the best out there. I agree that she could have went up against Gladys K for the title

I understand that. I still think Dionne has more soul, though, than Diana.
