Stevie Wonder honored by Brotherhood Crusade
Jet, Nov 29, 2004
Superstar Stevie Wonder was recently presented the Brotherhood Crusade's Walter Bremond Pioneer of African American Achievement Award during ceremonies at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Danny J. Bakewell, Sr., president of the Brotherhood Crusade said: "One only has to say the word 'genius' and the name Stevie Wonder immediately comes to mind. Over the years, Stevie Wonder has been an ardent supporter of the Brotherhood Crusade and tonight, on behalf of the community, the true beneficiary of this event, the Brotherhood is saying to Stevie, 'Thank you for your support.'"
Bakewell praised Wonder as not only an artist and musician "but also as a leader and a humanitarian who has dedicated his life and has acted with courage, commitment and determination."
Wonder's friend, fellow music legend Smokey Robinson, performed during the award ceremony.
The award is named after the founder of the Brotherhood Crusade, Walter Bremond, and it is presented annually to a Black man or woman whose life exemplifies the ideals for which the Brotherhood stands.
The Los Angeles-based non-profit charitable organization has given more than $50 million over the past 36 years to more than 1,000 agencies including the Challengers' Boys & Girls Club, East Los Angeles Shelter for Battered Women, Mothers in Action, the Chinatown Senior Citizens' Center and the African American Unity Center.
