And that album's FONKY AS HELL!!! Marvin Gaye outdid himself IMHO!!! Just when I thought Marvin couldn't get any better. He's probably mostly underrated for creating funky grooves. He pratically wrote, arranged, and produced the entire thing and it shows! What the hell's wrong with the critics? How they want to revision some stuff is beyond me 'cause when the album came out, they were all kissing Marvin's black rump ( ) and 20 years later, they were like "ah, the album was good but 'Sexual Healing' was the only masterpiece", laaaawd, "Midnight Lady" and "Rockin' After Midnight" are masterpieces in their own right and the way Marvin James Brown-ized "Joy"... ooh-wee. I can see why he was under a lot of pressure and everything. I had streamed the album and the sessions album not too long ago and heard different sides of each song and I'm glad Marvin polished the loose ends. I don't even see the problem, Marvin Gaye did his finest on this album and should be rewarded with such. No wonder this album was one of the most seminal LPs to come out of the '80s!!! With one album in that period, Marvin Gaye was still shaping music. Long live the King! Long live the King! Long live the King! I'll post a more sobering (not that way, I'm a non-druggie, lol) review later. But I just bought it today. I'm so happy!!!

Did you buy the stand alone version or the one with the SH Sessions. Personally I like the SH sessions versions of most of the songs better then the finished product. I'm still PO'ed at Harvey Fuqua forcing Marvin to water down "turn on some music" to what we got in the final version.
This is probably one of Marvin's most underrated albums. I remember I played the album to a teacher in HS and she was shocked that Marvin did something like that.
My fave song on the album is "joy". I'm kinda surprised there wasn't an alternate take of that song. Tho I did once hear a promo version of the song that had an extended guitar solo.
Oh and I just LOOOOOVE "my love is waiting". That song has such an infectious yeet gentle groove sound.
Can't wait for your more sobering review!

I got the stand alone remastered version, the one with the "Rockin' After Midnight" instrumental. I was like you about the final touch of "Turn on Some Music" when I first heard it (through a streaming site) but I'm used to it now. It's groovy, lol. I'm actually shocked about the way Marvin did the album too. It was a hint of the direction he was going to go into had he not been tragically taken out of this world. It's one of Marvin's FUNKIEST LPs to date. Look for the review sometime tonight around 10 or 11 and if I don't meet the deadline, then expect it this weekend. I got vacation from college for a week so it's all good! :holla:

Only just got the album ((Tim)) ... I thought you were part of the 'in' Marvin crowd :teehee: ...Just playing ...I do love this one as well though because it is just extremely diverse. When I first got the album I was impressed to say the least at how much work he had put into it, from writing to playing all those instruments. And up until that point I had never even heard of some of those instruments he used :haha: ...But Midnight Love isn't one to sleep on

 Hey, I was a late bloomer into buying CDs and ish. When I knew there were many copies of Marvin's albums, I don't know, I was a kid, lol. When I finally got to buy Marvin CDs, I realized how little they had them but I continue buying them and I streamed the album years before I actually got it so I knew about the album. LOL But yeah, Midnight Love is incredible!!!

Marvin was very ettiquette there. He's so damn prolific, I wouldn't be surprised if I hear he could speak fluent Spanish and French but he probably was a fluent French speaker. There's a lot of stuff even though he laid all his emotions bare on wax (and the David Ritz book, lol) that we probably really don't know. But I thought that was dope with what he did. Marvin was smooth with his ish.

I think I was born 30 years too late sometimes. I do like some songs out there today. I really liked 3 six maffia's tune that won at the Grammys. But yeah, I'll be a Motown (and Marvin Gaye in particular) man for life.

Yeah, that was ok, lol. But yeah, I'm a ride with Motown (the CLASSIC Motown) and Marvin until the day I die!
