If you were a filmmaker who wanted to make a biopic about Marvin, what would you do? The reason I ask this question is I keep thinking how to make an amazing 45-year story gel in just two to three hours 'cause let's face it, Marvin's life, even if it was made into a full-scale biopic, is more than 2 or 3 or even 4 hours of a film script. Something about connecting Marvin's early years from when he was a boy to when he released What's Going On could be interesting like when they filmed the Muhammad Ali movies. One movie, King of the World had focused on Ali's very early years like when he just started to find his identity (and that was a great movie because we got to know who Cassius Clay really was before he became the mythic legend Muhammad Ali) and Ali focused primarily on his claim to fame between 1964 when he fought Sonny Liston and 1974 when he fought George Foreman. What I'm thinking is if I had been given a chance to produce a movie on Marvin Gaye, I think not only would I DEMAND Motown to give me his catalog, but I would also demand that Marvin's family be given a percentage or at least 75% of overlooking the film or those that really knew him like Harvey Fuqua (who's still alive and kicking at 77). And for me doing the movie would give me great opportunities to present Marvin's life in a way that hadn't been done before.
Like, say, one film focuses on Marvin's early years between 1957 and 1971 - his formative years in show business. Another focuses on when he makes What's Going On, Trouble Man, Let's Get It On and all those great films and then when he tries to make a recovery in 1981-1982 but never fully gets there, and the other will focus on Marvin & Tammi. Then just have a full-scale biopic on the man in all of his 44 years. Not just his career but his life in between there and dissect so many inconstencies given Marvin.
I actually now think the film focusing on Marvin's final years is a great script, I just hope they don't demean him. They're doing it like so many biopics though. But I would have another movie focusing on Marvin's early years and then his prime years and then the stuff in between.
Because IMO, I don't think this one biopic of Marvin is the only film that will be done on the legend and it shouldn't be. And if Motown wants to be redeemed, well those guys need to get off their lazy butts and compete with this independent biopic. I have a feeling Motown may in fact give those independent people his catalog but then how will the film be because if they use the catalog and put all the pieces together, how will it look?
I think Jesse Martin is a fine choice to play Marvin during his last years because they look so much alike during Marvin's last period IMHO. But the younger Marvin looks like he's gonna have to have another character play him, and in turn it'll mess up the script because the person chosen to play Marvin will not only have to have his beard and stuff shaved but then grow it all back and get it to a texture where it looks like Marvin, so is the hair and then the way he moves, talks and stuff.
I think we can make this expected film such a promising future in hopes to in some way get people hooked on the genius of this man rather than what demons he had because if you knew what demons he had, you don't have to look no further than hearing him SING about it.
So what about it? How would you make a Marvin Gaye movie? Holla at your boy.
