Now this track, until most recently, was an unreleased track from Marvin Gaye's rich musical catalog that he had recorded with the late Freddie Perren and Fonce Mizell. Recorded in 1972, the song is called "Where Are We Going?" And it talked about the daily grain in the inner city and the question that lingers: where are we going? Where are we heading? With all of this going on, where are we getting? What does the future show? And it's one of the best socially-conscious tracks Marvin ever recorded during this period. I sense this was one of the tracks that was gonna be on the withdrawn You're the Man album. It reminds me of a Spinners track. And of course Marvin's doo-wop background vocals help Marvin's calm lead take over the song and visually takes you to the street, plus it's funky as all h, e, double hockey sticks. Ain't this track so relevant for today? As has been said, Marvin was way ahead of his time!
