I've decided to post this because I've always wondered "what if?" Like what if Marvin had not returned from Belgium and got back on drugs, what if Marvin hadn't been living with his parents, what if this, what if that? So I just wanted to know: in which category you think would fit into how Marvin would've done after the success of "Sexual Healing" and the Midnight Love album? Because it did look like with the Grammy wins and the album becoming his first platinum album and all (3 million in the U.S. now), that he was heading to a very successful period in his career. So what could he have done IYO under this question? Holla.

I think Marvin would have went on to do a few more diverse projects first off and then eventually move on to create his own label. I feel he was just far too creative to stick to touring with the old hits

I think Marvin would have changed the game of R&B, but at the same time, still be R&B.
Probably make a whole new sub genre :yeahbaby:

I heard he was supposedly trying to do something "different" on "Midnight Love" but his new label wanted a contemporary R&B album from Gaye. What Marvin wanted to do was more like John Lennon had done with his last album before he died, Phil Collins/Genesis and some of the new wave groups/acts or something like that. "Sexual Healing" does have that new wave feel to it but also a bit of reggae and electro-funk in it.

I didn't vote because I believe that the first two choices are both accurate. Like ((Motown Melody)) stated I think he woulda created a sub genre but in my opinion it would come from 'experimental projects' and I just feel that Sexual Healing was actually the beginnning of it all

Great topic ((T84)), without a doubt Marvin would have taken R&B to new heights :word:

Marvin is a MASTER and he would have still been introducing newness into R&B.

But really, if you think about it, Marvin was one of the creators of the neo-soul genre, I mean, artists today from that "genre" keep referring to either him, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight or Donny Hathaway. His next album after "Midnight Love" could've been a mixture of new-wave, electro-funk, hip-hop, jazz, rock, smooth soul, and R&B and it would've been something else! Marvin would've done something as similar as George Michael or Phil Collins or Hall & Oates but with a twist.

I read an article recently on D'Angelo from a few years back and he mentioned Marvin and I can hear Marvin's presence in a lot of neo-soul.
He may have started that movement a lot earlier than, say Tony Toni Tone or Mint Condition.

Right, (((Motown Melody))). I always felt that Marvin's late-'70s sound was revolutionary for its time. I mean, he merged with Leon Ware for "I Want You" and that sound of merges you can feel in Maxwell and D'Angelo's music. You can just tell D'Angelo admired Marvin more than any other artist he admired. In his vocals (both lead and background), in the way he played the piano, and in some of his lyrics.

I hear more Donny ... But a lot of Marvin ... Even a little Stevie ... I hope D comes back ... The game really needs him
