Yeah, I do think Otis played a big part in the Tempts' development, I had been so careful about giving Otis too much credit but all five men (who made magic as the Temptations) did do it their way. And Paul was the carrier for all of that. While Otis may have been a vocal leader, Paul led by his dance steps and his classic strut. With his push, Otis' leadership and the vocal talents of Melvin, David & Eddie - who was a great arranger, songwriter and costume designer for the group, the Temptations became the Temptations and that's the image of the Tempts that people will always remember. I mean: FIFTEEN #1 HITS ON THE R&B CHARTS and FOUR OF THOSE HIT #1 POP!?! And then they won Motown's first Grammy - with the vocal grit of Dennis Edwards - and blah, blah, blah, lol. Plus they got in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and did it all mostly by themselves. That's why they're forever the kings of soul to me as a group (Marvin's the solo king of soul, of course, lol).

((T84)) where you said I still feel in a sense that they're still underrated in terms of who people recognize as the people who defined Motown I meant in my previous post that with Otis it can be looked at in two ways. I will give him credit in saying he done his part during the groups heyday BUT what I personally don't like is because of his constant rotating of members, recognition from a large percentage of the public are going to members who have nothing to do with the group's history or overall legacy When you think about it couldn't we say that Eddie, Paul, David and Melvin are still second tier to whoever may be in the group currently

And you know what? You're absolutely right because the way Otis "kept things going", it's strange that they're recognized as "The Temptations". The Temptations actually lasted 1961-1975 when Dennis left. It just wasn't the same after 1975 with the Tempts. They went from being this outstanding group to "just another R&B group getting by". They tried to pass themselves as a mature Boyz II Men/Dru Hill in the '90s and '00s anyway. That's one of the reasons I can't stand Otis today because he really didn't keep the nucleus of the group which was Eddie, Paul, David and Melvin. The group's legacy is with those '60s and early-'70s records. Between 1964 and 1972, there was no other group like the Temptations, after 1972, the Jackson 5 and the O'Jays had replaced them.

Don't be fooled Tempts fans, Otis was not a leader in any sense, he was an equal member who later, after the departures of Eddie and Paul, became the vocal leader. With the leader deceased (Paul) and the reticence of the other leader (Eddie), Otis knew he could alter history. But we've all seen and heard what Eddie had to say. Cholly came on a lot later, after Paul approached him. Paul had the idea of how they would be and looks like he knew what he was doing Freak what Motown thought :hmph: Like you said, Tim and we all agree- the Temptations are the most successful and I'll say the best male group.

The Temptations are the kings! And they're a great example that you don't need Berry Gordy to get your career going. Paul & Eddie were the leaders bar none. LOL

When you think about it couldn't we say that Eddie, Paul, David and Melvin are still second tier to whoever may be in the group currently That's what I think a way. Especially when they do live shows and there is no mention of them what so ever :frustration:
