1.) Marvelettes - Miracles 2.) Supremes - Temptations 3.) Martha & the Vandellas - Four Tops
1.) Youthful appeal 2.) Most popular 3.) Mature sound
I was just thinking about the Motowners and their counterparts ... I stopped at group, but I'm sure I can think of comparisons in solo artists also

That seems just about right. I can't think of any solo comparisons though.

Good topic and comparisons so far ((Honey)) ... I would say: Brenda Holloway - Jimmy Ruffin...Were able to win fans over not only in America but in the UK on their own terms despite lack of promotion Velvelettes - Contours...Very versatile yet the odd groups out Kim Weston - Edwin Starr...Soulful with a soft vocal delivery but agressive when necessary Tammi Terrell - Chuck Jackson... Some of you may beg to differ but these two are extremely gutsy and fiery IMO!

Mature sound I always thought of it as: Vandella's - Miracles = Youth Appeal Marvelettes - Four Tops = Mature Sound But the Gladys led Marvelettes do fit like a glove how you put it!

I agree with the Marvelettes being on equal footing with the Four Tops overall but I think even with Gladys leading the sound is still much more mature than that of Martha the Vandella's.

And for me it not just their artistic style but something about them overall. Just can't seem to put my finger on it though
