That just proves to me that Mary was also never a good friend to Flo. I mean, it was...and WILL ALWAYS REMAIN Flo's group like the Temptations would always be Paul's group despite giving Mary & Otis "leadership". I mean, if Mary had been a true friend, she risked losing her career over it and she also took the move to just dismiss her "best friend" and stay with Diane and whomever was gonna replace Flo. That was dishonor on Mary's part. She should've done a better job at handling certain issues. As far as the '60s Supremes are concerned, Flo & Diane were the stars of the group and for Flo to be forced out, it ended so many things what could've been wonderful for the group. Of all the Supremes, I feel truly bad for Florence for the disrespect she got. Mary and Diane, I could care less. I definitely thought it was wrong of Mary to rehearse Cindy while Flo was still in the group.Don`t get me wrong,I admire Mary for her dedication to the group, but she keeps saying she is the co-founder of the Supremes. If I`m not mistaken Flo already had a member in the group before she asked Mary to join and Smokey asked "FLO" if Diana could join Flo`s group the Primettes.

Thank you! Sounded like Smokey begged Flo to get Diane in the group. Flo was very hesitant of letting Diane into the group even from day one and yeah, Flo was the FOUNDER of the group. Betty McGlown was already in when the group began forming. Mary & Diane came in at the same time, I think.

Betty McGlown was already in when the group began forming. Mary & Diane came in at the same time, I think. Just an interjection and some more food for thought........................ Florence performed with the Primes and at the time (as the story goes) Paul was dating Betty McGlown. Jenkins (Primes' manager) and the Primes thought a sister group would be the way to go. So they (Milton, Paul Williams and Eddie Kendrick) told Florence to find some girls to form the group with her and Betty. Florence chose Mary Wilson and Paul Williams brought in the girl from his church, Diane Ross. Smokey came in when the young ladies wanted to audition for Motown. Smokey or Claudette was a neighbor of Diane (will have to check the many stories) and that's when Smokey came into the picture. But it was Robert Bateman who got the Supremes noticed at the label.

WOW! I didn't know that. So it was PAUL who BROUGHT in Diane and it was Robert Bateman who introduced the girls to Motown, not Smokey? Dang.

Just to add my two cents..
((Funksis)) is correct in saying that it was Paul Williams who brought Diana in...and Smokey was her neighbour and was the one who got them their audition at Motown. Once signed they became Richard Morris' 'pet project', until they hit the top 40 because as we know those with constant hits had Gordy's attention at that time.
((T84)) Flo asked Mary to join the group before Diana came into the picture because they were good friends and had made a pact with each other. And also you are correct in saying that Florence was hesitant in letting Diana join. Who knows why is another question...

I think Flo probably knew something was up with Diane but decided to let her in anyway because of Paul because she probably promised Paul to look out for Diane. Anyone got any excerpts from either "Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme" or "Forever Faithful" or even "Call Her Miss Ross" that talks about Diane as a kid? It seemed compared to the other two girls, Diane's childhood is a faded memory or something. And sometimes I even wonder if 'Diana Ross' was her actual name. I mean they say her name was a clerical error on her birth certificate yet she was known OFFICIALLY as DIANE EARLE. And why Ross? Did her parents changed her name to Ross because of a family friend like Stevie's did (he was Stevland Judkins Hardaway on his birth certificate) or what? Diane's name change is a mystery to me except for the fact she decided to go with 'Diana' because it said 'superstar' or whatever.

 That's right, Robert Bateman was the Marvelettes' man, the Supremes' man WAS Smokey. Damn, I'd be rooting for the Marvelettes back in those days to succeed over the Supremes.

Smokey worked with the sole-Wanda led years of the Marvelettes, too. Guess her marriage to his "brother" Bobby made the Marvelettes interesting to ole Smoke :idunno: Now what would you do :haha:

Berry wrote that he gave her that name. He renamed her Diana because Diane didn't fit her or something or other. Who knows and who cares :haha:
