Here's how I see it:
The Ladies...................
Mary Wells
Marvelettes
Tammi Terrell
The Gents....................
Miracles
Jr. Walker and the All-Stars
Reasons being:
Miss Mary - First hitmaker, song writer, beautiful style of singing, set the standard at Motown, according to her the first artist Berry Gordy signed; she was fifteen and was alone for 2 years. She's recognized as a pioneer at Motown and many of her contemporaries who have been inducted into R&R (the Beatles) and her influence can be heard in other Motown ladies and other female singers that followed.
Marvelettes- First number one, writers, started the girl group craze at Motown and held their own in the girl group period, if not for them, Motown wouldn't have tried the other R&R alumgirl groups, the Martha & Vandellas and the Supremes
At least all of the Vandellas were included
Tammi- Are there more succesful duos, besides Sam & Dave? I know her and Marvin's work wasn't the first (male-female), but it was extremely popular and well received then and now. She really can be recognized as a pioneer, from her early signing at Sceptor/Wand. She arranged her own shows as a child. She was recognized and recruited by her peers, James Brown and Jerry Butler, R&R alum. Her style was pure aggression, class and sass. You can see later artists attempt her style, but they can't really pull it off.
Miracles- The whole group deserves to be there. Ronnie "co-wrote" the majority of the songs you only hear Smokey's name attached to and Pete and Bobby wrote a significant amount of songs with Smokey for other artists and the Miracles. All members wrote, sang and produced some of the most well known of their own songs and other Motown R&R alum's songs.
Smokey as a soloist, in the hall, help me out y'all, am I missing something?
Jr Walker & the All-Stars-
Ground breakers at the label and during the time. Have heavily influenced many singer/musicians. They're the only musicians on the label to receive credit. I'd call them predecessors to bands like Funkadelic, Kool & the Gang, Earth, Wind and Fire and contemporaries of Booker T and the MGs, also R&R alum.
All of these legends have made their mark in Rock and Roll and music period. They should be recognized by the "critics" and panel.
