NEWPORT - Bruce Hornsby and the Four Tops will be two of the major headliners at the ninth annual Sunset Music Festival series, which is scheduled for eight nights in June and July at the Newport Yachting Center.
Best known for their timeless music in the areas of pop and soul, respectively, Hornsby will take the stage on June 22, in his first solo show in New England, and Motown singing sensations the Four Tops will perform June 23. The musicians for the festival stage for each night will be announced at a later date.
Tickets cost $45 in advance and $50 the day of the show for Hornsby, and $35 in advance and $40 the day of the show for the Four Tops. Tickets will go on sale Monday, May 1, exclusively through the Newport Yachting Center box office at 846-1600, Ext. 2. Tickets also can be ordered on the Web at www.newportfestivals.com and at all Strawberries Music locations. Preferred-seating tickets are available at Flint Audio/Video in Middletown. Partial proceeds from the festival will benefit the Autism Project of Rhode Island, an organization dedicated to helping children with autism and their families.
"We're excited about announcing Bruce Hornsby and the Four Tops right out of the gate as our first two confirmed headliners," said Christopher Perrotti, general manager of the Newport Yachting Center. "We've tried since the first year of the festival to get Bruce Hornsby and to finally secure him solo is extra special. And the history of the Four Tops speaks for itself. They helped build Motown with a parade of hits. We had a sold-out house for The Temptations last year and expect the Tops will have the same appeal."
Hornsby emerged on the music scene 20 years ago with his triple-platinum debut album, "The Way it Is." The album generated three Top 20 hits, including its title track, and earned Hornsby the Best New Artist Grammy in 1986. Since that time, he has recorded eight albums - ranging from pop and jazz to bluegrass and soul - which have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and produced such hits as "Look Out Any Window," "The Valley Road," "Across the River" and "A Night on the Town."
He earned two more Grammy awards in 1989 and 1993, was a part-time member of the Grateful Dead in the early 1990s and has played on more than 100 recordings with artists ranging from Bonnie Raitt to Bob Dylan.
The Four Tops, with their blend of sweet harmonies and powerful vocals, arrived in Motown in 1963 and quickly set a high standard for contemporary soul with No. 1 hits "I Can't Help Myself" and "Reach Out, I'll Be There," as well as numerous tunes that reached the Top 40, including "Baby I Need Your Loving," "It's the Same Old Song" and "Standing in the Shadows of Love."
Their popularity continued into the '70s and '80s with such hits as "It's All in the Game," "Ain't No Woman Like The One I've Got" and "When She Was My Girl."
Grammy nominations, an appearance at Live Aid in Philadelphia and the release of the "Four Tops Anthology: 50th Anniversary" in 2004 are just some of the highlights in the career of this "one-in-a-million singing group," as described by Smokey Robinson.
The Newport Yachting Center is off America's Cup Avenue at 4 Commercial Wharf. For both Hornsby and the Four Tops, the gates will open at 5 p.m., with music starting at 6, the opening act at 7 and the headliner beginning about 8.
