Rhythm & Blues org reprises Pioneer nod Gordy to be feted with Lifetime Achievement Award By PHIL GALLO
The Rhythm & Blues Foundation, which ran out of cash and musicians to honor, has revived its Pioneer Awards, honoring Chubby Checker ("The Twist"), the recently rediscovered Bettye LaVette, Barbara Mason ("Yes, I'm Ready"), producer Thom Bell and the Delfonics ("Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)"). The Legacy Tribute Award will go to the late Otis Redding, while Motown founder Berry Gordy will accept the R&BR&B Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. The 14th Pioneer Awards will be held June 29 in Philadelphia. It will be the first presentation in the foundation's new home city, and all of the honorees have a connection to the City of Brotherly Love. The Pioneer Awards were created to provide financial, medical and other kinds of assistance to struggling soul musicians. In 2003, after years of handing out $15,000 to individuals and $20,000 to groups, the org was handing empty envelopes to honorees. Payments were later made after donations came in from stars such as Bruce Springsteen and a fundraising concert by Bonnie Raitt and others. Date in print: Thurs., Apr. 13, 2006, Los Angeles LINK

That was cool of Springsteen to help out, and it is good to have something that strictly honours the real talents of R&B :yeahbaby:

This really is a long time coming (back) Glad to see artists looking out for each other and honoring pioneering artists. Congratulations to Berry. Should he really be considered having a lifetime achievement He left the business awhile ago and although impressive, he was only holding Jobete. I suppose the credits he received do last a lifetime

I don't know about that, Funk, it's like he gave himself too much credit for founding Motown. All he did was hold Jobete and he left his presidential job in 1972 after he had moved the entire corporation to Los Angeles from Detroit. So I don't know... I mean, Motown didn't actually start with the name Berry Gordy IMHO. So I dunno... but since Smokey's there, might as well have the lap dog be happy his master's getting 'credits'. :frustration:
