Condon to direct "Dreamgirls" BY Ethan Aames (Cinema Confidential)
Variety reports that Bill Condon ("Kinsey," "Gods and Monsters") will be directing the big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical "Dreamgirls."
The musical is loosely based on the true life story of The Supremes during their years at Motown Records. The show debuted in 1981 and told the story of a trio of young black female singers in the early '60s who found themselves in the midst of an industry dominated by white male singers.
This would not be Condon's first experience with Broadway and cinema: Condon was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for "Chicago." He has written a first draft for the "Dreamgirls" film.

Should be interesting I'll say Beyonce Knowles Set for 'Dreamgirls' Role?
21 January 2005 (WENN)
Pop star Beyonce Knowles is being given the chance to expand her acting resume, and star in a new movie version of Broadway musical Dreamgirls. After cutting her acting teeth in Austin Powers sequel Goldmember and the upcoming Pink Panther remake, producers are convinced Knowles has what it takes to make a full-time film career and want her to headline the movie, about a singing trio from Chicago, loosely based on real life stars The Supremes. Beyonce is being tipped to play frontwoman Effie, the role made famous on Broadway by actress Jennifer Holliday. Chicago screenwriter Bill Condon is currently heading up the project and is rumored to want Ray star Jamie Foxx to take a role. Filming is expected to start as early as this summer.

Lucky for me they changed their minds lol.... ;D
From MAA:
Bootylicious star Beyonce has landed another supreme film role - playing the part of Diana Ross in a movie about her life.
The film Dreamgirls is loosely based on Ross during her years in hit Motown group, The Supremes.
The idea has been taken from the broadway musical which has been a huge success.
Beyonce - who made her film debut as Foxxy Cleopatra in Austin Powers in Goldmember - can be seen on screen later this summer in The Pink Panther.
She stars opposite Steve Martin and Kevin Kline in the film which is a prequel to the 1964 Peter Sellers original.
The film is in cinemas on October 21.

I guess they're going for a popular name right now; I'm just not convinced Beyonce is an actress. And as for her playing Diana Ross They look and sound nothing alike; but I suppose since everywhere we turn we see Beyonce, as it was with Diane, there in lies the similarity. I won't be breaking my kneck to see this one

Either role for Beyonce would be bad; I agree ((Motown)) she has not proven herself as an actress from the movies I've seen. Why not cast an up and comer or comers for each of the roles. Beyonce may be Rossesque in her exposure, but that should not be the deciding factor in casting either role.

You can say that again ((Jazzy)) I would much prefer to see some fresh faces instead of Beyonce.....but if the shoe fits

Let's give some others a chance to shine, Please!

NO DREAMGIRLS FOR USHER LATEST: R+B superstar USHER's manager/mother has rubbished reports her son is set to star opposite BEYONCE KNOWLES in a new movie.
Usher was named alongside JAMIE FOXX as co-stars in Knowles' new project DREAMGIRLS in trade paper VARIETY earlier this week (beg09MAY05), but the singer's mother JONNETTA PATTON insists her son won't be playing Beyonce's boyfriend anytime soon.
She states her son has not signed on for the project, which is an adaptation of a Broadway musical about Motown trio THE SUPREMES.
In a statement issued yesterday (13MAY05), Patton says, "Usher has not confirmed his participation in the film Dreamgirls, and a deal has not been set or finalized (corr)."
Knowles has signed on to play DEENA JONES, the leader of a trio of female soul singers, who cross over to the pop charts during the early 1960s.
The film is being directed by Brit BILL CONDON, who also wrote the screenplay.
Usher was billed to play the group's choreographer in the film, while Foxx is still believed to be playing the trio's manager.
