After leaving motown the spinners were very sucessful wit thom bell and the philly sound, but what if the tops were right along wit them instead of going to abc/dunhill? how would it work out for them? what do you think?

Well I think their material on Dunhill was quite good and followed their latter Motown output really well...not to mention their R&B chart positions overall were also pretty good...perhaps they should have tried going to Philly instead of signing with ABC

I think the Four Tops had apprehensions going to Philadelphia International.

I don't know. I guess they feel Gamble & Huff may have done them the same way Berry Gordy did 'em at Motown, lol.

Perhaps in time...but there's always a possibilty things could have been better, seeing as the Tops were already consistent hit makers with a good rep...I don't think ABC did them enough justice

No ABC really didn't. I don't think the labels had any idea really of how to market and gather material for former artists. If you think about it, only artists that maintained any pop success were that before and after Motown. Motown should really be called a genre! There's no other way to describe it. Maybe if some of the artists who left had got together and did some things, we'd be having a different discussion. And I see you ((Quick)) look was Gamble and Huff are being accused of by the O'Jays, there starship artists, is that what they're called?

Yeah, Gamble & Huff were accused of cheating the O'Jays and other groups out of royalties and the group was upset when an early collection of G&H tracks were released on a compilation.
And yeah, I can call Motown a genre, lol.

That's news to me even though I shouldn't be surprised really I'm sure Chic done the same thing to Sister Sledge but back to the subject - the Tops doing an O'Jays cut or two??? why not I can't think of any ABC songs off the top of my head at the mo
