The Supremes were stronger musically than Diana Ross & the Supremes, with Florence and with Jean. ((Jazz)) you are on point there. Florence was a powerhouse and even though she was in the background she gave the songs their punch and drive and you see (and hear) this even when the girls are performing, Flo's vocal's were right on top. But when Cindy comes in there is no stand out (Due to the Andantes were doing all the work) and once Diana leaves and Jean is in, their vibe as a group kicks in again because they are working as a unit. Not just a lead singer and two back ups.

That's why I've always held Flo in high regard because even though Diana held down the vocals (under B.G.'s rule), Flo's voice can be heard almost towering over Diane's at times. Especially in "You Keep Me Hangin' On", Flo's voice is boastful! I love that version now.

((Hits)) Florence had a powerful voice. You always hear her. With her, the Supremes were the strongest. With Cindy, I don't know. It was Ross and the Andantes. I think Cindy was there for looking like Flo, when you stand about fifty feet back, squinting with one eye and need glasses for the other. And the lights are way down low. They barely look any thing alike ((Timmy)) And I'd say ALWAYS over Ross and the background, right there, in your face! Florence was the spark! Jean did great and she brought the group back to the Supremes. But Florence ... :lady:

First of all :givemesome: - to the last three comments here.
Somebody once asked how can you listen to the Supremes and only listen to the backgrounds - I said easy!
Flo's voice will always stand out whether it's TV, CD or vinyl because she was the only real singer in the group. How can one not notice her vocal straight away. Being put in the background only makes her that more special and I'm glad that there are real Motown fans out there who know that her star will never stop Shining!

Melody I agree with you about Ross being overrated. Once she left the Supremes, the group became not only underrated, but Motown gave them little or no promotion. Ross was always overrated, her singing, her performances and her acting. She doesn't change much, I always see the same exaggeration in everything she does. The Supremes were stronger musically than Diana Ross & the Supremes, with Florence and with Jean. You are so right,I agree with you 100%!!! Florence and Jean could blow. These ladies have gifted voices. It`s a shame that Florence didn`t get many leads. Like I always said, she sounded much better than Ross.
