If Flo had led the group, I feel the Supremes would've been a VERY different group than what they became. Like really and truly become the female version of the Temptations. A lot of questions are still going on about how talented vocally Diane was compared to Flo. But really, the Supremes weren't a group anymore until AFTER Diane left. Diane's solo career started when Flo left in 1967. If Diane, though, had been the one to leave, and Jean entered the picture with Mary and Flo, then the group would've been a funky girl group than they already were when she came to replace Diane to join Mary & Cindy. But something in me said if Motown had allowed Flo to sing lead on a hit or two or three or even ten, then, we wouldn't be hearing from critics about how underrated the Supremes are overall. ((Timmy84)) you have brought up some very good points. Except, I think the Supremes are overrated, well, I guess that Diane Ross is overrated. But when Motown is mentioned all you hear or see is a superimposed Diane and the Supremes all over the place.

I think the Supremes overall are in fact more immediatley recognised before the other artists on the label - or did you mean how underrated the 70's Supremes were

Yeah, that's what I meant, the '70s version.

Oh, everything was put into Diane, and it didn't work out like they planned or hoped.
The Supremes turned into just another group when she left, but the music was so much better than the previous and original lineups.

If there was ever one group Motown flubbed with (and I know they messed with a lot of groups), the Supremes were that group.

Although I think that in the heyday of the company others got 'flubbed' in favour of the Supremes because of all the doors they were opening so quickly whereas the 70's version got 'flubbed' because there was no suck up. JMO Yeah, that's how I think they really got flubbed too, even Diane. They used and flubbed other groups, all of the other groups, but the treatment the Supremes received at Motown set them up for a very rude awakening to the outside world and industry.

Diane has her fans and they think she can sing because they're her fans.
But everyone and I mean everyone knows Flo was the better singer, whether they admit it or not.
I take li'l surveys with my girls and some of the boys I work with, to see if they recognize the legends. And I was told, after holding up a pic of Diane as she is now and a picture when she was young, by those that recognize her ... "Oh, she's one of the Supremes."
Glad some of the youngsters recognize the ladies and know the real deal.

Once she left the Supremes, the group became not only underrated, but Motown gave them little or no promotion. Ross was always overrated, her singing, her performances and her acting. She doesn't change much, I always see the same exaggeration in everything she does. The Supremes were stronger musically than Diana Ross & the Supremes, with Florence and with Jean.
