This SOTD (song of the day) comes again from the irreplaceable Motown powerhouse girl group Martha and the Vandellas. This song is "I Can't Dance To That Music You're Playing", which was a more funkier attire than the group were accustomed to but it served them right. Rumor is the rumors rubbed band leader Martha Reeves the wrong way that she refused to sing the whole song though Martha has since said that the reason the song's choruses are sung by Syreeta Wright instead of her because she and the Vandellas' touring schedule was in interference with the recording. The song was released in July of 1968 and became a top 20 R&B and top 50 pop hit upon its release. The album was off the group's '68 album, Riding High[/i]. Enjoy!
I Can't Dance To That Music You're Playing
(Richards/Dean)
Sugar babe
I wanna tell you what's exactly on my mind
I won't stay at home another night while you're out making time
I'm well aware of where you go
And every girl you see
'Cause whenever I can't find you boy, my phone begins to ring
Chorus (Syreeta Wright and the Andantes):
I can't dance to that music you're playing
Stop, think it over, and rewrite your tune
I can't dance to that music you're playing
Better get yourself together, you better do it soon
Last Friday night the phone rang
You said "it was Little Joe
"He had a one night stand to play, down on Cottage Road"
Yet you went down to club to play, you weren't playing with no band
Because your sax was there at home all night behind your music stand
Chorus
I can't dance
(I can't dance)
I can't dance
(I can't dance)
I can't dance to what you're saying
I can't dance to what you're playing, uh-huh...
Chorus
(Sax instrumental)
Now if you really love me
Better pack your bags and stay
Don't tell me you gotta think it over
Got to get away
I'm taking all that medicine
Of yours that I can't stand
Doctor, please change your prescription
Or I'll find another man
Chorus
(Martha singing ad-libs):
I can't dance
I can't dance
No baby, I can't dance to that music, no, no
I can't dance
I can't...
