I'm just gonna go on and say it (and you may disagree with me) but I have faith to believe that "You've Made Me So Very Happy" was the greatest late-period Motown joint to come out when Motown was still "The Sound of Young America" and it's helpful that Brenda and Patricia (RIP) co-wrote the song! Everyone knows it more as a hit for Blood, Sweat and Tears but Brenda's original has emerged as a true soul classic least in my neighborhood. What about y'all? What's your thoughts on this brilliant song by Ms. Holloway?

I like the Classic Five Temptations version of the song as well.

No secret here Brenda's original overshadows any cover ((Quick)) ... what I really love about Brenda's is that even though the lyrics may seem a little mature to a young listener she sings it kind of innocently but not in a fluffy type of way (like one of the Supremes songs) ...whether or not it is the greatest of that period is debatable lol...but it sure is up there

Yeah I should've said "in my opinion" if I didn't already but yeah it's a strong contender.

LOL I missed you guys! ((Quick)) It should be understood, unless otherwise stated that it's your opinion, DUH! And yeah, this would definitely be a contender in my book also. I've always loved her voice, ever since the first time I got to hear Every Little Bit Hurts. She always sang mature content with a sweet soulful sound. If she was on another label I think she could have contended with Dionne.

I like her voice but I find it to be a little too 'stiff'. Brenda probably could have sung her material with little effort and make it sound twice as better.

I heard Brenda sung "Every Little Bit Hurts" not too long ago and she wasn't "stiff". Smokey had told her not to get too loose on stage because "she has a great voice, she can't be doing all of that". But I saw a video of Brenda doing the remake to her 1966 single "Reconsider" and I think, "Smokey, you nitwit, the girl has sex appeal!" LOL If Brenda was allowed to be BRENDA, Diana Ross wouldn't have stood a chance after Mary Wells left, I'm just gonna say that right now.

Yes, Dionne Warwick, and yes she was either extremely stiff or holding back. At least in comparison to contemps like Aretha LOL! I do agree on one point, she doesn't HAVE to use her sexiness to sing or sell records but hers seemed to come naturally, so why restrict her???

Brenda actually reminds me of Mary quite a bit so I think you're right - because she was sassy to boot! Maybe they thought it was just too much because of what the label was trying to do with image.

I think this is one of the sweetest songs ever made and for me it does qualify as one of the last great love songs from that Motown period Besides, I HATE a lot of Motown covers!

Motown still was struggling after Mary Wells left that they had to tell Brenda to tone it down because they probably thought she was TOO MUCH like Mary, Motown had a messed-up logic of how to build performers. Nowadays, I'm sure Brenda CUTS LOOSE whereas when she was in Motown, they wanted her to "appeal" to white audiences. Funny thing was by the time Brenda left Motown, Aretha Franklin's energetic sass and Tina Turner's raw sex appeal had made Motown's seem dated fast!
