New program celebrates Motown's greatest performers By Ron Wynn, August 05, 2005
Despite the many CD reissues and previous TV specials devoted to the achievements of Motown, there's truly something different and unique about the new production Motown—The Early Years, which airs at 9 p.m. Saturday on WNPT-TV, Ch. 8. (Check www.pbs.org for air times and broadcast dates in your area)
The show is co-hosted by Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Abdul "Duke" Fakir of the Four Tops, Claudette Robinson of the Miracles and Martha Reeves and contains exceptional rare footage from the label's archives specifically culled for this program.
Both the archival material and the new performances spotlight some fine vocalists that have been previously overlooked in past specials, among them the Velvelettes, Gladys Horton and the Marvelettes, and Brenda Holloway.
The show is divided into four acts plus an encore clip segment featuring excerpts from a Motown Review show from 1964 done at the Apollo Theater. Other visual highlights include the youthful Little Stevie Wonder doing "Uptight!Everything Is Alright," multiple numbers from the Four Tops, a Dennis Edwards Temptations Review medley that honors the group's deceased original members, and archival tunes done by Diana Ross & The Supremes and Smokey Robinson & the Miracles. The show also has the final televised Four Tops appearance of founding member Obie Benson, who died weeks after the taping.
Marvin Gaye is prominently presented throughout the show as well, appearing initially in the second act doing "Ain't That Peculiar" and then returning to lead off the final act with Tammi Terrell in a moving rendition of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." Mary Wells starts off a "Ladies of Motown tribute" portion in Act IV with "My Guy" followed by Holloway; the Marvelettes; Velvelettes; and two classic Supremes tunes, "Stop In The Name Of Love," and "Back In My Arms Again." These two pieces, as well as the Gaye selections, are presented in true stereo for the first time, as well as "Ooh Baby Baby" and "Tracks of My Tears" from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles.
This show is part of the ongoing My Music series on PBS, and a four-disc collection of Motown tunes Motown—The Early Years will also be made available to PBS members only. (a separate retail version entitled The Motown Box is presently available - the difference between the two is that Disc 4 will have a different song line-up) This set includes the CD debut of Wonder's "Purple Raindrops," the original "B" side of "Uptight!," and also has an extended version of the Miracles' immortal "Tracks of My Tears" that was never released to the public.
