What's Going On Artist: Marvin Gaye Label: Motown Year Released: 1971By Alan Light Motown Records - which introduced the concept of the assembly line to pop music - had no interest in giving its artists creative control, much less in venturing into territory that was explicitly political. But Marvin Gaye, the label's greatest pure vocalist, was prepared to wait out Motown founder Berry Gordy, Jr. - and when Gordy finally, grudgingly caved to Gaye's artistic ambitions, the result was one of the defining albums of its time. What's Going On not only kicked off an era of unprecedented social consciousness in R&B, it also introduced a whole new style of making records, layering multiple vocal lines and rhythm tracks into mellow, hypnotic grooves that made the hard-nosed message of songs like "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" and the immortal title song utterly irresistible. www.time.com/time/2006/100albums/0,27693,Whats_Going_On,00.html

Well at least it's being recognized I'd have to say this is Marvin's greatest album And again one of the TOP albums There's only one song that does quite measure up for me What a great testament to Marvin of course, but I can't forget the unrecognized genius of Renaldo Benson Two musical genuises

Obie helped spark the flame and Marvin made the flame burn brighter than anything Obie envisioned. I'm sure Obie had a smile on his face every time that song was playing on the radio. Both legendary men created a masterpiece and that led to the masterpiece the entire album became.

I think this album is a collective masterpiece because in addition to what Obie and Marvin brought to the table, the Funks and the Andantes are in PERFECT form - it's pretty much the perfect album of it's time

I also question the inclusion of Inner City Blues on here, everything else seemed to flow nicely, even Right On. It just seems like the album had a nice theme with What's Going On, and even though Inner does have that socialness to it, it just sticks out I think.

I think it fits fine too. It was a perfect mixture of pain and joy and it fit the album because at the end of the song, they brought in a reprise to "What's Going On" so it fit NICELY.

I also have to say "Inner City Blues" is one of the funkiest and jazziest cuts ever produced on wax. Marvin's scats were irresistible. The drums were like a layered heartbeat, the piano made it bluesy and Marvin's vocals were humming so harmoniously it was wicked. You could just imagine being surrounded in the inner city. That's how serious it was. And the lyrics and Marvin's expressionist vocals took you to those places where if you felt similar you'd holler. Marvin gave it all on one song more than many other artists do for a whole album.

I think Inner City sticks out because of it's production like ((Quick)) said ((Honey))...but I wouldn't say it doesn't fit in...I think the song is truly in its element ...

It's alright, a lot of people feel Marvin's later albums were better than WGO so please believe you're not the only one.
