Uh uh uh :notgettingit: Not the ladies you're thinking, as lovely as they are. We have and will return to those two lovely angels and the songstress and Diana Ross another time. But I'd like to get into, the background singers: -Martha & the Vandellas -Supremes -Andantes
Here's a list to get us started: -Stubborn Kind of Fellow -Hitchhike -Pride and Joy -Can I Get A Witness -You're a Wonderful One -Baby Don't You Do It -How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You) -Ain't That Peculiar -I Heard It through the Grapevine
Anymore, throw them on up, I'm just starting with the biggies, well, well-known biggies. What do you think of the female backgrounds with male lead?

You know the only other male singer who had a great rapport with the ladies in background was Ray Charles and Marvin carried on that notion with his ladies in much the same way. With the Vandellas, they and Marvin had a certain chemistry that was OUT THERE, the Supremes not so much though they did sound good in "Witness" and "Wonderful One" but the Andantes and Marvin were just perfect in songs like "Little Darling I Need You", "Your Unchanging Love", "Too Busy Thinking...", "Mercy Mercy Me", etc. The Andantes were legendary for their background work on the Four Tops and Marvin especially.

Yeah, Martha and the Vandella's are my favorite choice personally because there is alot more raw energy and Martha's vocals are front and center.

Yep, their collaborations were gritty R&B too! I mean, EVERYBODY now knows "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" was one of Motown's finest songs and that Marvin and Martha (and the Vandellas) DELIVERED! :woo: No one can beat the DO-DO-DO-WOW! background in the beginning of that song, lol. And Marvin and 'em going back and forth. "Hitch Hike" was also a special recording and yeah you can clearly hear Martha in the background going "Hitch hike, baby/hitch hike, children..." And "Pride & Joy"? Don't get me started. I love Marvin & Martha and the Vandellas together.

Been a while for me here anywho I agree the girls lent Marvin a quality that was maybe not totally unique because Ray Charles popularized that but it sure made Marvin's vocals pop out front and center more then if he didn't have any BG singers.

I agree with the majority ((Cleo)) ... Only Ray and Marvin trluy owned this forumula ... I don't have a preference when it comes to the girls though, but I think they were each used at the right stage :reallysing:

Tru dat, (((RoadRunner))). I don't mind none of the groups who sung background because they fit the song. BUT I can imagine each of the groups - the Andantes, the Vandellas and the Supremes - on a lot of tracks that they weren't featured and turned it out. Oh and y'all do know already that Marvin sung with the Blossoms onstage. Ray and Marvin truly were the only ones who fit the men and "three women" complex, so to speak. You can tell Ray Charles' innovations paved the way for Marvin and he knew it though he wanted to do something else, but you can tell he was feeling the joy of those recordings back then. Marvin's '60s records were the bomb anyways tho.

I would say it was the right formula for Marv :yeahbaby: :ilovemusic: What you make of it ((Cleo))??

That just reminded me of something, on the Lost & Found I can't tell who's backing him up on Love's More Precious Than Gold. It's my favourite song on there but I'm stuck between the Supremes or Vandellas - any takers?? lol

I almost thought it was the Vandellas on Wonderful One, lol. What convinced me it was the Supremes was Florence. You can just hear her go WONDERFUL ONE (she and Diane) and of course that oooooh they do, then that's when I was convinced. LOL The Vandellas and Andantes would've HOLLERED OOOOOH but the Supremes were like ooooooooh, woonnderful onnnne, lol.

((Quick)) somebody did say that Wonderful One should have been credited to Marvin Gaye and Florence Ballard because she is so prominent on the track ... I can't say they were wrong, seeing we can just about hear Diana :teehee: ... and ((Kay)) I haven't played that disc in awhile ... I know it is a very early one though, so it could be either :justlisten:

LOL! For real, Flo's vocals were just out there. Can't mistake that. Her vocals made the Supremes.

[/quote] I like the idea of using the well-known as backgrounds, showed a sense of unity in a way. And it did set him out from the rest, except the Four Tops. I'd give the Andantes to the Tops and believe it or not, I'd rather the Vandellas back him up more than Supremes. He and Florence could have done some great duets. Givin' us more of the Kim Weston duet-sound or even a similarity. Overall, the whole lover image (with the ladies) worked and worked well for Marvin. Although.........................The Tops and the Tempts backed him up nicely too (the Originals and Spinners, too)
