From Yahoo "Law & Order" star tunes in to Marvin Gaye movie By Nellie Andreeva Mon Feb 6, 2:10 AM ET LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Hot on the heels of hit films about Ray Charles and Johnny Cash, a project about the final years of Marvin Gaye is set to begin production in May. "Sexual Healing," an independently financed drama starring "Law & Order" cop Jesse L. Martin as the late Motown icon, will shoot in Hungary and Germany. Lauren Goodman will direct from her own script. The movie chronicles Gaye's self-imposed exile in Europe after years of battling drugs, domestic issues and label headaches. There, he was rescued by a promoter who helped Gaye record his biggest-selling album, "Midnight Love," which yielded the monster comeback hit, "Sexual Healing." Gaye's life was cut short the day before his 45th birthday in 1984, when his father killed him. "More than just being the voice of a generation, Marvin Gaye proved to be its very heartbeat," Goodman said. "As a filmmaker, I was drawn to tell the story of a human being who was never fully realized, one with faults and foibles and an uncommon grace expressed every time he picked up the microphone." Various producers have spent years trying to make a movie about Gaye. Originally, the project was intended to cover a larger portion of his life but was refocused on his final years because of rights issues with his Motown-produced records. Music biopics are a hot genre these days with the success of 2004's Oscar-winning "Ray" and 2005's Oscar-nominated Cash movie "Walk the Line." Martin most recently starred in the feature adaptation of the hit musical "Rent." Reuters/Hollywood Reporter Link

From the Detroit Free Press: Martin will play Gaye in indie drama
A movie project about the final years of late Motown crooner Marvin Gaye is set to begin production in May. The Hollywood Reporter notes "Sexual Healing," the independently financed drama, will star "Law & Order" cop Jesse L. Martin. Authentic Detroit locations? Guess again. The shoot will be in Hungary and Germany. Lauren Goodman will direct from her own script. The Euro locale says loads about the film's focus: It chronicles Gaye's self-imposed exile in Europe after years of battling drugs, domestic issues and label headaches with Motown. There, he was rescued by a promoter who helped Gaye record his biggest-selling album, "Midnight Love," on Columbia Records, which yielded the monster comeback hit, "Sexual Healing." Gaye's troubled life ended the day before his 45th birthday in 1984, when his psychologically troubled father shot and killed him. Link

I just don't understand why Motown won't let them use Marvin's music. Don't they know that the fans would love (and PAY) to see a movie that chronicles his career from the start. It just goes to show just how selfish and low they are.

Yep, exactly. It would've made things great. Motown is too selfish, man.

Lauren Goodman will direct from her own script. This sounds a bit worrying to me....I wonder exactly how accurate her 'script' is :suspect:

LOL, yeah, I don't trust that either. If it ain't accurate, you gals betta protest. But you know, one of these days, we will have the full scale Marvin biopic and it will be right. Of course we may see it on TV but then again, Motown better come with it either way they decide. LOL ...then again, Motown's been crappy in the movie department since "The Last Dragon" and "The Jacksons". LOL

 @ Kay... YEAH, ADD THEM CRAPPY MOVIES THERE TOO! "The Wiz" too. Just for putting Diane Tramp, I mean, Diane Ross in the movie. Stephanie Mills was made to play Dorothy and she's been bitter about it ever since but she got back at Diane the old fashioned way - through the music. In fact: "Lady Sings the Blues" "Mahogany" "The Wiz" "The Last Dragon" "The Jacksons: An American Dream" "The Temptations" The Motown 40 and 45 television specials Smokey Robinson's 20-something year anniversary (why was that televised?) Motown Returns to Apollo Motown Films and Productions SUCKS!!! F*ck Motown... hope the Marvin movie with the stuff it's forced to ONLY show is better than anything Suzanne de Fat, I mean, de Passe, and Berry Farts, I mean, Gordy, ever DREAMED OF!!!

I know, right. So much for the Hollywood dream. They began and peaked with Diane getting an Oscar nod and she ain't made a decent film role since. Even "Lady..." was a f*cked-up bio because it, like "Ray" for some reason, showed one side of Billie Holiday and then try to sugarcoat it for Hollywood value. The real Billie Holiday had it harder than the way Miss Prissy portrayed her. "Role of a lifetime" my foot. I hope Jesse Martin does a decent job at our boy. If not, he's gonna get it too.
