Irene Cara (of FLASHDANCE soundtrack fame) and Lonette McKee star in this dramatic story of a musical trio's rise to stardom. Three sisters, who are raised in an impoverished neighborhood, have dreams of become pop singers. After a dark period which includes entering several dinky talent shows, they are finally discovered, and enter a world of glamour and fame. Like many though, they soon learn that there is a dangerous side to success, and they must find ways to combat the threat of self-destruction. A score by the infamous Curtis Mayfield adds soul to the drama, and the three women's tour-de-force performances are riveting.

En Vogue covered the Sparkle version (not Auntie Ree's version) of "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" and their '92 video copied Sister & the Sparkles' version from the movie.

Awesome! Well I'll just go to my local video rental store or somethin ... When I first heard about it, I was surprised, cuz I thought Dreamgirls was the first major Supremes/Motown referrence in mainstream media.

Look at what the hell I found on the web Similarities between The Supremes and The Dreams * trio * three girls * brown Americans * based in Detroit, Michigan * group names rhyme (Supremes and Dreams) * original group names changed (Primettes and Dreamettes) * both groups' songs rose to the top of the charts many times * determined record company heads (Berry Gordy and Curtis Taylor) * both girl groups start as back-up singers (Marvin Gaye and James Early) * company owner gets involved with one of the singers (but not the same one) * both group lead singers (Diana and Beyonce) are pretty and light-skinned * both lead singers (D & B) eventually went out on their own as a solo singer * Diana Ross 'endorsed' Beyonce Knowles for DRS-type Dreamgirls lead singer * Beyonce acknowledged that she met with Diana Ross several times before filming * both girl groups known for their visualized choreography and dance pizazz When will we get past this dumb you-know-what "* both group lead singers (Diana and Beyonce) are pretty and light-skinned"Diane/Diana wasn't pretty or light-skinned last time I check, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but she's no one's light-skinned Whoever wrote this is obviously an idiot and though I am not American, being Black I find this brown Americans tag a little offensive. Are some people still in the d*mn dark ages they don't know what the correct term should be The story is obviously about a Black female trio so complexion doesn't even need to be mentioned if we are dealing with the events lawdy!

I wanted to see what would happen after Curtis found out about Magic. So did I, but I guess it was for people to make their own conclusion because we know one of the Sup's had Gordy's baby and eventually everything came out to all involved
