I agree with (((Cleo))) though, when I saw the film, they had TOO MANY Motown-a-likes in there. LOL

It appealed to many, but it leads them on an errant path with regard to the Supremes, Motown and ironically the original play
I was afraid that the movie would turn out this way

That often happens with remakes of either plays or original movies, sometimes it's best to leave it alone.

Look at what the hell I found on the web
Similarities between The Supremes and The Dreams
* trio * three girls * brown Americans * based in Detroit, Michigan * group names rhyme (Supremes and Dreams) * original group names changed (Primettes and Dreamettes) * both groups' songs rose to the top of the charts many times * determined record company heads (Berry Gordy and Curtis Taylor) * both girl groups start as back-up singers (Marvin Gaye and James Early) * company owner gets involved with one of the singers (but not the same one) * both group lead singers (Diana and Beyonce) are pretty and light-skinned * both lead singers (D & B) eventually went out on their own as a solo singer * Diana Ross 'endorsed' Beyonce Knowles for DRS-type Dreamgirls lead singer * Beyonce acknowledged that she met with Diana Ross several times before filming * both girl groups known for their visualized choreography and dance pizazz
When will we get past this dumb you-know-what "* both group lead singers (Diana and Beyonce) are pretty and light-skinned"
Diane/Diana wasn't pretty or light-skinned last time I check, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but she's no one's light-skinned

All of those things could have been for any popular girl group in the 1960s! No DUH lol - Its just the Supremes are the most well known case.

Yeah, DIANE was the darkest member of the group, Flo was the LIGHTEST! People don't know complexions real good. It's just the fact that their names are familiar. Most girl groups usually had -ettes and -elles in their last names. The Chiffons, Vandellas, Supremes and Shangri-Las didn't. They made it Supremes-related because the Supremes made the cover of TIME magazine (on a cover discussing "The New Rock" or something like that) and if you check them getting out of the airport in London, they were wearing THE VERY SAME OUTFITS THE SUPREMES WORE ON THE COVER OF "A LITTLE BIT OF LIVERPOOL" FROM 1964! As much as the play tries to stay away from those comparisons, the film version makes it easier for them to paste that Supremes stuff on it. And as much as it could be about any girl group, NO OTHER GIRL GROUP made it to the BIG TIME like the Supremes. They were the first black group to attract an international audience outside of the US and the UK so it was obvious from what the filmmakers was doing was making it seem Supremes-esque in a WHOLE lot of ways.

EXACTLY. I think the filmakers were trying to make it Supremes-related for the purpose of renewing the Supremes' story, you know, to get it back into interest. If it was mroe targeted towards the Marvelettes, the Shirelles, the Crystals, etc, people might not have been too interested or not known what was going on.

Exactly, & speaking of the Marvelettes, why don't they make a movie about them?

I think the movie was more-Supreme laden due to the so-called drama, sure we all know the Supremes were the most successful and well known of the girl groups, but darn near all of that is over shadowed by all the drama and controversy, thanks to the truth and Mary's and Diane/Diana's version of their truth
Quick a Marvel's movie would be interesting, a very good story

Yeah, exactly, that was quite embarrassing to witness. All people can seem to talk about due to the Supremes' story is their ongoing drama.

Marvelettes movie ... I would like to know what went behind-the-scenes of one of Motown's most mysterious girl groups.

I heard the Marvelettes were treated like outcasts while at Motown.
