As soon as I heard/saw "Patience", I thought, "that's Marvin for ya!" lol

Exactly. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Cuz after all, they were paying tribute to Marvin somewhat, but on the other hand, they were giving way to people comparing DREAMGIRLS to Motown, which is why alot of people give it only ok reviews, because they think it doesn't represent the Motown music.

In a way, they're right. The music wasn't as street-oriented as much of Motown's music, they had soulful vocals and everything but it wasn't like what you'd expect from a movie that barely much IMITATED the story of Motown & some of its artists in some levels.

Exactly. The music wasn't Motown-related at all (except for maybe the Jackson 5 spin-off thing, and Patience), and anyone who saw the Broadway musical would know that. But once again, its not even supposed to be, but people draw conclusions that it IS supposed to be from the similar story plot to Motown, the album covers, dresses, etc. Although now that I think about it, Cadilac Car, Patience and Jimmy's Rap sounded the most Motown-influenceed to me.

Yep! So far I've read two bad reviews and one of them said that the music sounded like nothing HDH made and that Gladys and the Pips would never record such third rate material lol Some folks really don't get that it isn't supposed to be the Motown story! lol

But yet they still have elements of the real story in the thing!

I know! I think its funny and misleading at the same time. With all of this "its the story of The Supremes!" stuff going around, its no wonder why people get that from the movie. Now people are gonna think, "OIh, Diane wasn't a you-know-what at all" or "The Supremes recorded a Flo Ballard single?". But if they think Flo didn't die and became successfull like Effie, I'm gonna have to slap somebody! LOL

About Eddie's character, I think other than Marvin, Jackie & James (the usual suspects, lol), there was an Otis Redding roughness to Early's voice too. Come to think of it, he had Marvin & James' wardrobe down pat, had the showmanship of both Redding and Wilson, and the mixture of Marvin, Jackie, Otis & James' vocals. Like has been said, he was a mixture of all those great legendary soul men.

Yessir, indeed. I don't think you can put a finger on who Effie and Jimmy are based on. Many say Effie is based on Etta James, Martha Reeves, and the big one, Florence Ballard. Jimmy is compared to Marvin, Otis, James Brown, etc.

Yeah Effie & Jimmy were two characters that you could relate to anybody.
