Motown being sued by Vandellas, Marvelettes - singing groups suing Motown Records Company L.P. over royalties - Brief Article
Members of The Vandellas and The Marvelettes are suing Motown, alleging the record company cheated them out of royalties on 1960s hits like Heat Wave and Please, Mr. Postman.
Betty Kelley, Annette Beard Helton and Rosalind Ashford Holmes, members of The Vandellas, claim Motown failed to abide by a 1986 settlement to pay royalties for their work. The group was headed by Martha Reeves.
The Marvelettes plaintiffs, Katherine Schaffner, Wyonetta Cowart Motley and Georganna Tillman, allege Motown broke a series of 1961 contracts by exploiting master recordings by the group and failing to pay royalties.
