Martha Reeves Heading in A new Direction
Martha is standing to get elected onto the Detroit City Council later this year. With the first primary elections being held 2nd of August, Martha is one of 126 candidates to have put their names forward from which only 13 will be elected.
She is busy out there campaigning for votes. She is standing as thevoice of the people both young and old, she is their voice and shesays it loud and clear.
Raising money for her campaign is no easy ride either, as all the moneyused for it, has to be earned by fund raising. As the law states, she cannot use any of her own money to fund her campaign, while
Martha is hard on the trail working for votes and nominations from the city residents. She has just cut her promotional jingle for the radio and now has to get the radio stations to promote .
Martha's main reasons for standing for election were the fact that she has seen the city deteriorate into such decline over the years, where other cities she has visited have flourished. Detroit was and still is in parts, a beautiful city and the people are so warm and friendly and welcoming. Yet no one promotes tourism to the city, for visitors to enjoy the wealth of heritage the city has to offer them.
Whether it be the automobile industry, or the vibrant musical history, the rich heritage of Detroit has been and still is being lost and destroyed more every day.
A devastating fire only this week wrecked a major heritage site in the Picquette area of Detroit were a thriving market was as well as the standford car plant, housing classic Ford cars.
The powers that be over the past years, seem to have forgotten the real people ,and their needs and aspirations. Martha wants life brought back into the city, with safer, cleaner streets, more police presence visible and shopping centers, of which there are none in the city center.
An environment where all generations can work and live together to bring life and a sense of pride and community back to their neighbourhoods. People encouraged to own their own homes, disadvantaged and homeless people helped back into society.
Schools encouraged to bringing the artists of yesterday andtoday, to teach the youth how to play the instruments, write music, produce records, make costumes, etc.
When Martha was growing up, everyone helped one another encouraged each other and loved their neighbours, she stated all that is missing in todays world, we need to get that back into our society before it is too late.
Tourism needs to be encouraged to the city as it stands now anyone visiting the city is hard pressed to locate places of factual interest unless they know people who live in Detroit to point out the birth places of places of interest.
A Hall of Fame to commemorate the musicians who lived, worked and died in Detroit, the ones still here should also be acknowledged and celebrated there is nothing to let a stranger know where Hitsville is located.
Martha would like the young people to be more involved and included with a voice that is heard and consulted to the city council. The youth are the adults of tomorrow. So many are being lost to drugs guns and gang culture if they were heard we could make a difference to their lives.
