MARVIN GAYE’S ‘LIFETIME’ EXPANDED: Hip-O Select bolsters singer’s final studio album for Motown. May 21, 2007 *Marvin Gaye's 1981 album "In Our Lifetime?," his final studio album under Motown, will be re-released on June 19 by Hip-O Select with lots of extra goodies, reports Billboard. In addition to the original album, the new "Love Man" edition includes three outtakes, the non-album "Ego Tripping Out" single and an alternate, previously-unknown mix featuring a different running order. The set also includes seven tracks Gaye intended for an earlier version of the album, a party-themed effort he planned to call "Love Man." Only "Ego Tripping Out" ever saw the light of day from those sessions, with Gaye opting to tackle more personal issues on what eventually became "In Our Lifetime?" "In Our Lifetime?" peaked at No. 32 on The Billboard 200, and spawned a lone top 20 hit on Billboard's R&B charts, "Praise." It would be followed in 1982 by "Midnight Love," the last album Gaye released before his shocking 1984 murder. Here is the track list for "In Our Lifetime? -- Expanded Love Man Edition": Disc one (original LP): "Praise" "Life Is for Learning" "Love Party" "Funk Me" "Far Cry" "Love Me Now or Love Me Later" "Heavy Love Affair" "In Our Lifetime" Outtakes: "Nuclear Juice" (instrumental) "Ego Tripping Out" (LP mix) "Far Cry" (unedited) Original "Love Man" single: "Ego Tripping Out" (single A-side) "Ego Tripping Out" (instrumental / single B-side) Disc two (Odyssey Studios alternate mix): "Praise" "Life Is for Learning" "Heavy Love Affair" "Love Me Now or Love Me Later" "Ego Tripping Out" "Funk Me" "In Our Lifetime" "Love Party" "Love Man" sessions: "Life's a Game of Give and Take" "Life Is Now in Session" "I Offer You Nothing But Love" "Just Because You're So Pretty" "Dance 'N' Be Happy" "Funk Me, Funk Me, Funk Me" "A Lover's Plea" www.eurweb.com/story/eur33677.cfm

They're giving Marvin Gaye RESPECT... finally. He intended the original title of the album with THAT question mark. I wonder how "Nuclear Juice" sound too.

"Love Man" sessions: "Life's a Game of Give and Take" "Life Is Now in Session" "I Offer You Nothing But Love" "Just Because You're So Pretty" "Dance 'N' Be Happy" "Funk Me, Funk Me, Funk Me" "A Lover's Plea" www.eurweb.com/story/eur33677.cfmI feel as though I have waited forever and a day for the Love Man sessions! It's about time. I wonder if 'Funk Me, Funk Me, Funk Me' is an extension of the original

Yes. I bought it on soulmusicstore.com This album is not my favorite. But it's a good Marvin's LP. But I'm afraid these "Love Man" sessions aren't so interesting. It's more jam sessions than other things.

I hope they have it in stores, I really love this album ((foulecamp)) so it doesn't sound too good to hear the Love Man sessions aren't holding up lol Do any of those tracks in particular stand out to you though???

Well I guess I can take that, especially as we know there were some problems with the project anyway, but I'm still interested in hearing what he was doing from an artistic standpoint

LOL! Of course they weren't "up to par", Marvin felt the songs were musically kicking but lyrically limiting so he cut out the lyrics and the concept of the original album - which was originally supposed to be a party record but was destined to be another "Here, My Dear" because of his problems with wife #2 (Janis) so instead of releasing that, he changed the lyrics around on the songs and gave it new titles and there came "In Our Lifetime". To hear the process between 1979's Love Man Sessions, the final 1981 mix of the album, unedited versions of some songs and the album produced under a very different take in a different studio is thrilling to me because you get to see what was going on in an artist's mind. This deluxe edition has made me a bigger Marvin Gaye fan to be honest. Oh and "Nuclear Juice" is KICKING!!!!! That's some jazz-funk-Latin fusion for yo ass!

Also we know how bad-ass a drummer Marvin is. I'm thinking he played drums on "Nuclear Juice".

This is exactly what I wanted to know. Where he was artistically. The uneditied versions may seem like 'jam sessions' at first but we have to keep in mind he was in transition, something we (as music consumers) do not experience anymore.

Exactly. An artist of Marvin's stature is of a rare kind anymore. It just makes it more thrilling to hear these cuts to see where Marvin's mind was at the time. It's one of the best "behind the scenes" editions I've received. "In Our Lifetime?" is a rare masterpiece in Marvin's collection, I feel. I love the Odyssey Studios mix version of the album too.
