Hudson, Whitaker expectedly wins Oscars for their roles
LOS ANGELES - The Oscars just added more color to their luster Sunday night when Forest Whitaker became just the fourth black male actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as an African dictator in "The Last King of Scotland" and Jennifer Hudson became not only the first former 'American Idol' to win an Oscar but become just the third black female actor to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a booted singer from a soulful '60s girl group in "Dreamgirls". Even though "Dreamgirls" co-star Eddie Murphy lost his Oscar to Alan Arkin in his role in "Little Miss Sunshine" in the best supporting actor category (Murphy was said to have not been taken with all the accolades admitting during one award ceremony that he's not comfortable with winning accolades), it was still a big win for black actors who for just the third time in recent years had two wins in the same time (Denzel Washington and Halle Berry won in 2002; Jamie Foxx and Morgan Freeman in 2004 precedes this year's).
Other black Oscar nominees included two-time nominee Will Smith and African native Djimou Hounsou in the acting categories and in the best song category, former Quincy Jones protege and Michael Jackson duet partner Siedah Garrett was nominated for co-writing one of the three "Dreamgirls" songs nominated, "Love You I Do".
